What is Health Coaching?
A Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness authority who helps others feel their best through individualized food, habit adjustments, and lifestyle changes that meet their unique needs and health goals. Oftentimes, Health Coaches provide their services in private coaching practices with one-on-one sessions and follow-ups to offer support, accountability, and recommendations to help clients succeed in their target goals.
Health coaching isn’t about one diet, philosophy, or one way of living. Instead, Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches focus on bio-individuality – the idea that we’re all different and have unique dietary, lifestyle, emotional, and physical needs. This means that we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness. Instead, Health Coaches work with clients to help them discover how to eliminate harmful habits or behaviors, fuel their bodies and their minds, and become the healthiest, happiest versions of themselves through a holistic approach.
Health Coaches also emphasize holistic health beyond the plate as they approach wellness through primary food. At the core of the Integrative Nutrition curriculum is the idea that there are areas of your life that impact your long-term health just as much as the food you eat – your relationships, career, spirituality, and physical activity.
Generally, Health Coaches use the concepts of bio-individuality and primary food along with over 100 dietary theories explored during the Health Coach Training Program to take a proactive and holistic approach to health.
In addition to her IIN training mentioned above, Doctor Staci is able to help children (with parental assistance) with oral health care and issues, guiding them back to healthy habits. The mouth cannot be overlooked when trying to optimize wellness, and as a parent of two young girls, she is able to relate to other parents and their daily struggles and challenges. She will offer tips, support, and mentorship along the way!
The Happi Health Journey
I grew up in in a fairly rural town in Maine, and after suffering a very severe bicycle accident at the age of ten, I knew I wanted to be a dentist where I could help restore people’s confidence and smiles. I was always very interested in diet and nutrition as I grew up with a mother who loved her garden and as a runner who was always looking to perfect my time, agility, and endurance.
After losing my father to poor lifestyle choices and a decade later suddenly losing my mother to cancer, I became committed to a paradigm shift where I focused on root causes and avoiding disease through lifestyle, mindfulness, and daily choices. I have always gravitated toward alternative and holistic means to address my own personal health concerns and to create a preventative lifestyle. My own naturopathic doctor was a tremendous inspiration to me, encouraging me to change my mindset from a traditionally trained and practicing dentist, where the model is very surgical in nature (often band-aiding underling issues), to one that takes a whole-body and functional approach to helping patients. By understanding the root causes of disease, patients can manage issues functionally first, allowing the innate desire for our bodies to thrive to shine through.
After opening my own holistic dental practice in Portland, Oregon, I committed my message to be one focused on diet and food choices. “Eat A Rainbow” became our mantra where we made eating colorful foods from our earth fun, exciting, and understood. Cavities are nearly 100% preventable and are considered one of the number one chronic diseases in the world. With diabetes, obesity, and fatty liver disease also on the rise, I sought out even more training and education to help people create healthier selves, families, and homes. After attending a lecture by Tieraona Low Dog, an Integrative MD and herbalist, she encouraged me to check out various nutritional programs and health coaching platforms to truly create a whole-body practice. Soon after, I enrolled in a health coaching program, the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, where I focused on nutrition, bio-individuality, and balance to optimize health and well-being. After receiving my certification, I made the decision to combine my dental knowledge with my health coaching background to help guide parents, their children, and their communities to achieve better health with the following offerings:
- Cavity prevention, arrest, and reversal strategies
- One-on-one hygiene instructions to help with bedtime battles or personal improvements
- Pacifier and thumb-sucking cessation programs
- Recipes, meal planning, and nutritional guidance for picky eaters or to streamline feeding your family
- Early airway intervention guidance
- Parenting guides, philosophies, and strategies
- Access to product lists, educational sheets, presentations, and discounted supplements
- Parental support and lifestyle tips
